This Week

With an array of coffee mornings coming up for Macmillan, one of our regular events for young people in the shape of OMG, news of Homelessness Sunday, and a welcome to people from Alabama, we’ve got another week of wonderful things!

There ‘s also news about the Walsingham Pilgrimage, a planned visit to Moorland Community Centre, and details of prayer and worship for the week ahead!

OMG! It’s time for young people!

Our next OMG! Event for young people takes place on Sunday 22 September at 5pm at St Saviour’s Church.

All young people are invited, and it is also a wonderful time for young Walsingham Pilgrims to reconnect, and for us to hear their stories and experiences as we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Walsingham. There will be a time of worship followed by a barbecue.

MacMillan Coffee Morning

There are several Coffee Mornings for Macmillan across the Ministry Area

It begins with St Paul’s Church on Saturday September 21 as we take part in the world’s biggest coffee morning raising money for MacMillan Cancer Support. The kettle will be on from 1030am, and there will be loads of amazing cakes to buy!

The next Coffee Morning then takes place at St Mary’s on Sunday September 29 after the 11am Sunday Mass from 12 noon when we will have the usual tea and coffee time, but donations are requested for all the sweet treats on offer!

And if that wasn’t enough, there will be coffee mornings after Mass on Sunday October 6 at St Saviours and Sunday October 13 at Ss Dyfrig and Samson

The Wales Window of Alabama

Next week, we are pleased to be involved in a visit by people from Birmingham, Alabama who are visiting the community with events at the Senedd, St Mary’s school and church and Butetown community Centre.

60 years ago, the Baptist Church there was the target of a terrorist attack and the window consequently funded by the people of Wales. We will welcome the group to St Mary’s Church on Friday at 1130am. If you’d like to be involved to welcome them then please get in touch with Fr Dean.

You can find out more about the window here in a news item from last year’s 60th anniversary:

Heating up!

We have an update on the heating problems experienced at both St Mary’s and St Saviours.

St Saviour’s requires a new boiler which will be in the region of £12,000 and St Mary requires a complete new heating system at the approximate cost of £85,000. Whilst we explore the next stage for work to be agreed and funds acquired we will also need to source some temporary heating for the coming months. We’ll bring you more information and progress over the next few weeks. In the meantime, if you’d like to know more then please speak to Fr Dean.

Harvest

At the end of September, as Autumn begins to slip in, we give thanks for the Harvest.

Each week, we receive donations for Cardiff Foodbank, so if you are presenting any food for the Harvest celebrations, please can you ensure they are tinned or packaged. You can find out what items the Foodbank requests at their website.

At St Saviour’s after Mass well also being serving sausage sandwiches! Mmm!

Homelessness Sunday

On Sunday 6 October, we commemorate Homelessness Sunday as we pray for all who are homeless, and those who work to support them, and share something of the work of Llamau whom we will be supporting over the next few months.

We’ll also be able to reveal news of a Memorial Service for those who have died homeless which will take place at St Mary’s at the end of November. You can check out more about Llamau and their vision to end homelessness here:

Cargo House

Thank you to everyone who has so far contributed to the welcome gifts for families who will have a temporary home at Cargo House in Butetown.

At the moment, there has been no progress made by the Local Authority as some work needs to be completed on the premises to make them fit for purpose. We’ll keep you updated!

Ministry Report

On Wednesday, the Ministry Area Council met, during which the following Ministry Report for the last quarter was presented by Fr Dean.

It offers a brief and general outline of some of the main areas of ministry being carried out on top of the regular and routine. You can read it here:

Moorland Community Centre

Three days a week, Moorland Community Centre offers a cooked meal for a modest price, and provides a great place for people to gather. The meal is just one thing they offer, and they do amazing work providing a warm, welcoming and safe space, particularly for older people.

A few of us are planning to visit together (along with some of the regular patrons from St Saviour’s) on Tuesday 8 October at 12 noon. Please can you let Glyn Perryman or Fr Dean know if you would like to join us so that we can book you in and arrange your choice of meal! You can find out more in a blog post written by Fr Dean back in April.

Walsingham 2025

Bookings are now open for the Walsingham Pilgrimage 2024 which takes place from July 21- 24 2024.

For the first time, bookings are taking place online, and you can discover more at the Eneter the Mystery webpages, which give details of the pilgrimage, how to book, and a link to a booking form. If you would like us to make the booking for you, then please speak to Liz at St Saviour’s, Georgina at St Mary’s, or Fr Dean. You can check out the link below:

Also, this week…

This coming week we welcome the local Chapter of the Society of the Holy Cross (SSC) to St Mary’s on Tuesday, and the Diocesan Conference takes place on Thursday evening (online) and all day Saturday (St John’s School, Aberdare). Also, the Cardiff Citizens Leadership Team meets on Monday.
