This Week
With Harvest Thanksgiving and Homelessness Sunday, October Devotions, Black History Month, MacMillan Coffee Mornings, Harvest lunches and Playlists for Life, and more, it’s a busy time as we turn to October!
Harvest Thanksgiving

On Sunday we celebrate thanksgiving for the Harvest at all the churches across the Ministry Area. Offerings of food for Cardiff Foodbank are welcome .
A few weeks later, we have two great Harvest Lunches planned for Sunday October 13 at St Paul’s Church, and Saturday November 2 at Ss Dyfrig and Samson Church. Please get in touch with Cheryl at St Paul’s or Kath at Ss Dyfrig and Samson to book your seat at the table!
OMG! We had a great time!
Check out the highlights of our time together last week when we gathered for a short time of worship followed by a barbecue
MacMillan Coffee Morning

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Coffee Morning at St Paul’s last week which raised around £340
The next Coffee Morning takes place at St Mary’s on Sunday September 29 after the 11am Mass, and then after Mass on Sunday October 6 at St Saviours and Sunday October 13 at Ss Dyfrig and Samson
Living Bread

‘Living Bread’ is a short and gentle time of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, with prayer, Scripture, reflection and silence.
It will continue to take place on the first Wednesday of the month in a different church across the Ministry Area. This month, we begin the new cycle of prayer at St Mary’s at 6 pm
The Wales Window of Alabama

This week , we were pleased to be involved in a visit by people from Birmingham, Alabama who are visiting the community with events at the Senedd, St Mary’s school and church and Butetown community Centre.
You can watch the ITV News report below from their first day here:
Mass of the Sick

Each month we celebrate the Mass of the Sick with an opportunity to receive laying on of hands and anointing as we offer the Mass for the sick.
We are beginning a new monthly cycle of celebrating this Sacrament which will take place in different churches each month. We begin on Tuesday at St Mary’s with Mass at 6pm.
Heating up!

We have an update on the heating problems experienced at both St Mary’s and St Saviours.
St Saviour’s requires a new boiler which will be in the region of £12,000 and St Mary requires a complete new heating system at the approximate cost of £85,000. Whilst we explore the next stage for work to be agreed and funds acquired we will also need to source some temporary heating for the coming months. We’ll bring you more information and progress over the next few weeks. In the meantime, if you’d like to know more then please speak to Fr Dean.
Homelessness Sunday

On Sunday 6 October, we commemorate Homelessness Sunday as we pray for all who are homeless, and those who work to support them, and share something of the work of Llamau whom we will be supporting over the next few months.
We’ll also be able to reveal news of a Memorial Service for those who have died homeless which will take place at St Mary’s at the end of November. You can check out more about Llamau and their vision to end homelessness here:
Playlist for Life
Over two decades of scientific research has shown that listening to a personalised playlist can improve the lives of those living with dementia. In fact, listening to music that is personally meaningful has many psychological benefits, meaning anyone can benefit from a playlist.
Playlist for Life is a music and dementia charity, founded by writer and broadcaster Sally Magnusson after the death of her mother who had dementia. Their vision is simple: for everyone with dementia to have a unique, personalised playlist and everyone who loves or cares for them to know how to use it.
If you’d like to help deliver the project in our Ministry Area then please speak to Fr Dean. You can find out more about Playlist for Life here:
Black History Month

October is Black History Month and there are many events and activities across Wales. We want to make sure that it is also marked in some way across the Ministry Area, so there will be prayers across our churches throughout the month.
We also have a few dates booked in the diary when you are invited to St Mary’s School for two Assemblies, one led by Mrs Prichard and the other by Fr Dean on Friday 11 October at 2pm when he will present an icon of St Martin de Porres to the school. If you would like to attend either of them, then please speak to Fr Dean so that we can tell the school.
Finally, the WMC is hosting an augmented reality experience called Colored: The Unsung Life of Claudette Colvin during October. If you would like to be part of a church group booking then please let us know. It last for 40 mins and costs £10 (or £6 for students, under 26, disabled or over 60s) Check out the video below:
October Devotions

Join us in a few weeks time as we welcome others to celebrate October Devotions to our Lady of Walsingham.
It’s an ideal time to reconnect with other pilgrims, or get a taste of pilgrimage to Walsingham. Bookings are also open for the Walsingham Pilgrimage 2025 which takes place from July 21- 24 2024. More details at the link below or you can book with Liz Norman, Georgina Partidge or Fr Dean
