The Stations of the Cross (1963)

The Stations of the Cross, which begin in the Lady Chapel and continue around the Church, mark out the stops along the Way of Sorrow which Jesus took from Pontius Pilate’s sentence of death to Calvary.

For many years, the Stations of the Cross in St Saviour’s were a simple set of pictures brought over from the old iron Church in 1888.  Over the years, several attempts were made to replace them.

In 1928 it was suggested that new Stations were purchased in memory of Fr Empson who had been both curate and Vicar here.  He had left the parish to be vicar of Firle and often spoke of a need for a new set.  He died in 1925, but it wasn’t until 1963 that these striking aluminium Stations, designed by Trevor Roper were installed.
