Discover St Saviour’s

Lady Chapel Altar (1884)

The four metal panels were designed by Frank Roper

A slab of Caen stone set on a wooden stand, this altar came from the old iron church of St Saviour.  Initially, hanging behind the altar was a picture of the Holy Child and Mother enthroned.

The Chapel was initially painted blue, with a blue roof.  Around the roof was the inscription, “Alleluia! Lo Mary hath brought forth the Saviour of the World, of whom when John saw him he said, ‘Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world.  Alelluia!’

The Four metal panels behind the altar in the Lady Chapel were designed by Frank Roper and depict four hedgerow flowers named after Our Lady.
