St Francis Banner

There are many reminders of the old St Francis Church in Splott, and this banner was given (and possibly made) by Miss Dawson, sister of the first Vicar of St Saviour’s.
The banner illustrates the stigmata when St Francis received a particular part in the passion of Jesus by receiving the wounds of the crucifixion.
It was repaired for the St Francis Festival in 1940 by the East Grinstead Sisters, who wrote: “It is a marvellous piece of tapestry, all woven in one piece.”
This painting which is nearby, and which was originally placed close to what was the St Francis’ Chapel, was given by Miss Jessie Curtis in 1972 in memory of her parents, both faithful members of St Saviour’s. Her father, Cuthbert, had been the Parish Treasurer for many years. The artist was Mr Roy Hunt.
This altar from St Francis Church was also placed here when the church closed. It is now used as a nave altar. St Francis Church closes on Tuesday October 14th, 1969.
Archbishop Glyn Simon celebrated the final Mass there, and several former priests of the parish also took part. The registers tell us that 161 people received Communion.
