The Church Hall

The original Church Hall stood just across the road from St Saviour’s. It was the site of the old iron church of St Saviour which opened in 1884. The subsequent hall was sold in the 1980s to give way to the housing development you now see.
The proceeds were used to reorder St Saviour’s and provide a new space within the church. We continue to use our church building as a resource for the church and the wider community and are currently exploring new ways to update and reshape the building.
The old Church Hall had been home to many sporting activities over the years, including badminton, football and tennis, not to mention other cultural organisation such as St Saviour’s Brass and Silver Bands.
St Saviour’s Gymnastics Club, founded in 1901 and which continued through to the 1930s. During that time, it won the Welsh Championship Shield several times. In 1912, Mr William Le Beau, one of its members and instructors, won the Bronze Medal for Gymnastics at the Sweden Olympics.

In 1933, Jack Peterson, a Cardiff boy, became the British Heavyweight Champion Boxer and on January 13th of the same year he had been present at a Boxing Show at St Saviour’s Hall.
