The Porch (1907)

St Saviour’s Church was designed by the esteemed G.F. Bodley, a response to the growing population of Cardiff as a result of Industrial expansion.
When it was first built, it was part of the Parish of Roath, which had also been responsible for the building of several other churches, including St German’s in Adamsdown which was also Bodley designed.
Although St Saviour’s Church was dedicated in 1888, the porch in which you stand wasn’t added until nine years later (in 1907) because the whole of the south aisle wasn’t completed until 1895.
Initially, there was a wooden porch on the inside but this was rather inconvenient as it took up too much space. The original design of the porch planned for this church was found to be too large and Mr Bodley, the architect, drew up a new design. It was one of the last works he ever carried out. He died on October 21, 1907, just over a week after the porch was dedicated on October 13th.
