The Church Organ (1895)

The organ at St Saviour’s (installed in 1895) is a memorial to Henry Offley Wakeman. He was a generous benefactor of the church and responded to the appeal for funds for the church of St Saviour which stands today.
He was also a renowned church historian, and when he died at the age of just 46 in 1899, it was said of him that he was “one of the most influential lay representatives of the abiding force of the Oxford Movement.”
At the time of installation, the organ was still incomplete with several missing stops. These were later added for Easter 1900. The case was designed by G.F. Bodley, the architect of the church. Until 1948 it was blown by hand, a very exerting activity, and you can still see the mechanisms for this inside the organ.
