Imposter Syndrome?

It can be tempting to measure our lives by the lives of others. Or to compare our faith to the faith of someone else.” Here’s today’s reflection from the daily Mass.

Of all the disciples, perhaps it is Peter who may experience what we call ‘Imposter Syndrome.’ The idea that the situation in which we find ourselves is really above and beyond us and that, one day, someone will catch us out and show us for what we really are.

At first, Peter seems confident. At this stage, he doesn’t want to show himself up in front of the other disciples. So, at the invitation of Jesus, he steps with bravado on to the surface of the sea. However, it’s not long before he begins to sink, and he cries out for help. As Jesus reaches out to him, he asks why he has such little faith.

It can be tempting to measure our lives by the lives of others. Or to compare our faith to the faith of someone else. It may leave us feeling rather miserable or despondent. We may even try to conceal our weaknesses, or to remain in the safety of the boat without stepping out in faith. Peter’s faith may not have been as strong as he thought but through his dangerous experience, he is drawn closer to Jesus, who holds him and saves him. Peter learned a valuable lesson: how to recognise Jesus when all around is dark, and how to trust him when all seems lost.

Mass today is in St Dyfrig and Samson at 630pm
