At first glance, the parable of Jesus seems to offer an unjust system of employment. It would certainly fire the enthusiasm of any trade union rep! Yet, we’d be missing the point if that’s how we see this story. For the parable’s meaning is about generosity—the generosity of God who lavishes his gifts upon us.
Each of us is blessed in different ways, and our gifts are many and varied. It is all too easy to look at the lives of others with a sense of envy and wish we had their gifts or that we could be as blessed or privileged as they are. Their lives seem so attractive to us, and so we yearn for something we are not—and never will be.
We can waste our gifts as we wish for others. We can underestimate our significance and think that other people are more important. Perhaps all we need to yearn for is the grace to appreciate what we have, recognising the graciousness of God in the gifts he has given. So what gifts do you have? And how can you use them for the glory of God?
