In school, one of the things I remember enjoying in English was learning the skill of precing: reducing a long text into something much shorter whilst keeping its meaning and tone and information. Sometimes, many of us may use too many words—preachers especially! In theological college, one of the things we learned was, “Preach about God. Preach about ten minutes.”
In the gospel reading today, as the Pharisees sidle up to Jesus to test him with a question, his reply is succinct and to the the point. They’re ready to pounce on his words as evidence against him. ‘Which of the commandments is the greatest?’ they ask. In response, Jesus succinctly sums up the whole law of God in just a few words. ‘Love God. Love your neighbour.’
Some people may think the Christian faith is about a whole list of do’ and don’ts, a series of moral judgements, restricting our lives and sometimes alienating people. It’s not difficult to see how this can be the received view. Yet Jesus is clear. Everything hangs on only two things. Our need to love God and one another. It’s as simple (and profound!) as that!
